Nepal faces extreme disaster risks due to its complex geography, rapid urbanization, and limited infrastructure. Located in a seismically active zone, the country is highly vulnerable to earthquakes, floods, landslides, and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), with climate change further exacerbating these risks. Nepal ranks 11th globally in earthquake vulnerability, 4th in climate change-related vulnerability, and 30th in flood vulnerability. Additionally, Kathmandu is ranked among the 10 most earthquake-prone cities in the world. Despite existing policies and disaster management plans, emergency preparedness and response efforts remain insufficient.
To address this gap, SIMEX Hub was established in 2022 as a dedicated institution offering simulation-based disaster risk management training. It works with communities, government agencies, private enterprises, development partners, and academia to enhance institutional and individual capacities. Simulation exercises are among the most effective tools for testing policies, protocols, and response mechanisms while strengthening preparedness skills.
SIMEX Hub aims to institutionalize and standardize simulations through collaboration with key stakeholders. Nepal’s inclusion in the Early Warning for All (EW4A) initiative highlights the urgency of collective efforts in disaster preparedness, including green building initiatives. Investment in preparedness, response capacity, and early warning systems saves lives and reduces economic losses.
Backed by professionals with over two decades of experience in the Nepal Army, UN, and humanitarian agencies, SIMEX Hub is committed to bridging knowledge and capacity gaps. We invite like-minded professionals to contribute their expertise and strengthen disaster resilience.
